Crawl spaces in this metro sit over damp valley ground, vented to humid summer air that condenses on cool joists — a moisture machine running all season. Basements fight the same ground moisture through walls and slabs. Add stored cardboard, a little organic dust, and darkness, and both spaces offer mold everything it wants.

"Basement smell" IS microbial activity — it is normalized, not normal. A dehumidifier sized to the space often solves mild cases; persistent or worsening smell deserves an inspection.
Should moldy crawl space insulation be replaced?
Colonized fiberglass cannot be reliably cleaned — it comes out during remediation. Whether and how to re-insulate depends on the moisture strategy we set up for the space.
